Jun 17, 2021

Professor Zhili Huang, a researcher from Fudan University, president of the Chinese Sleep Research Society and a Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute (TCCI®) Investigator, recently published a paper titled “Neural Circuitry Underlying REM Sleep: A review of the literature and current concepts” in the journal Progress in Neurobiology.

In the paper, Professor Huang discussed several types of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep including a reciprocal interaction model, limit-cycle model, flip-flop model, and a model involving γ-amino butyric acid, glutamate, and aminergic/orexin/melanin-concentrating hormone neurons. He also summarizes two common disorders related to REM sleep, REM sleep behavior disorder and narcolepsy.
